The beginning of GHAFES is directly linked with the work of Christian
lecturers from the British Inter Varsity Fellowship (IVF) in the late
1950's and early 1960's. These lecturers invited their students home
for a weekly Bible "reading" which were followed by questions,
discussions, prayer, tea and biscuits. Some of these students got
converted and banded together on their own initiative and formed the
University Christian Fellowship (UCF) and the Inter Hall Christian
Fellowship (IHCF) of Legon and KNUST respectively. The Fellowship at
University of Cape Coast (UCC) was formed later on by students who had
been members of Scripture Union in their secondary schools. The three
University Fellowships, at a conference in Koforidua in 1966 formed the
Ghana Inter University Christian Fellowship (GIUCF),
GIUCF was born with a vision: To strengthen Christian students through
the study of the Bible, to witness to fellow students and to spearhead
the formation of evangelical Christian Fellowships in the tertiary
institutions in Ghana . This vision has been pursued since then. From 3
Christian fellowships we have grown to 26 fellowships on 26 tertiary
campuses with over four (4) in the process of affiliation. Currently
our membership stands at about 3000 students.
With more college groups affiliating to GIUCF in the 1970's the need
for a name change to reflect both University and College Fellowships
was felt. Ghana Fellowship of Evangelical Students (GHAFES) was
therefore adopted in December 1975 to reflect this reality. Our
graduates, called GHAFES Associates are scattered throughout the 10
regions of Ghana and in the world providing leadership and serving the
Lord in various spheres of life. |
